Tinsmith

At Genesee County Village in Mumford, New York—a recreated nineteenth-century farm and village of original buildings—I took tinsmithing lessons twice (making simple ornaments) before spending a day (August 2, 2011) as an apprentice tinsmith in costume. I worked at the tinsmith's shop under the expert direction of Jim Nicoll, making several items of tin plate—a small dish, candle holder, nutmeg grinder, and ornament—and interacting with visitors (see Historical Interpreter).
